Rodere Rat Rescue was not fully realized until the work had already begun. In fact, the idea is still new. Having already rescued nearly 40 homeless rats, we hope to continue our efforts. Our main goal is to spread the word about rats as pets in our area, along with promoting understanding of a very misunderstood and historically shunned animal.
As the founder of RRR, I have my mother to thank for introducing me to these wonderful animals. I was given my first pet rat at the age of 11 by her. As a rat owner on and off since 1998, I have developed a deep love and respect for rats. I, unlike my mother, was never raised believing that rats were dirty, deceitful, and disease ridden creatures. Despite my mother being brought up with those teachings, she endeavored to find out for herself. In fact, she now helps me in my rescue efforts, however her love for them is not quite as strong. She prefers her four legged soul mate, which happens to be a female chihuahua, Pogo.
It has occured to me that many people do not understand the name of our rescue and I wanted to include it's meaning here. Rodere is the latin verb meaning 'to gnaw', which rats of all shapes and sizes and walks of life are quite known for. Our abreviation is also meant to stand for our three main goals- Rescue, Rehabilitate, and Rehome!
We intend to rescue as many as we can, while we can. And our efforts do not stop at rats. We have rescued countless dogs and cats, including a very interesting incident with two Bob Cat kittens. We've also rescued reptiles, although because of their costly upkeep we try to avoid it. All animals are welcome here, as long as they would not pose an unavoidable danger to the animals already here at RRR.
